Re: Vegan food in Xela?

Hi, Jenny. I also follow a vegan diet and I have enjoyed a couple months in Xela. I don't think you will have any problems! Xela has a lot of restaurants and cafes that serve simple, fresh food that is easy to identify. Tortillas sold in the street are vegan. Guacamole and a side of "picante" (hot s...

Re: Newbie Guatemala city to san pedro

I would just like to add that a lot of shuttles right at the airport may offer to take you to Antigua (just 45 min away) and that's not a bad option, either. You can get to the lake from there easily (take the chicken bus like you said, not a shuttle if it's overpriced). And Antigua is a safe and ea...

Re: bicycles in Xela

Hey me, too! But I'm hurt b/c I got drunk and fell down some stairs... I doubt that will get me much sympathy (although maybe it qualifies me for a job at Xelawho?)... I know you can rent bikes in Xela... maybe from the Vrisa book shop. I don't know about prices but somebody on here will know. Unfor...

quick question a/b meds, teeth, gold mines

Hello! Can anybody tell me... if Malaria pills are available in Guatemala without a prescription? Or even if a prescription is needed, are they easy to get? (Preferably not on the street in San Pedro...) I have never seen a doctor in Guat. but I imagine it would be a wonderful experience and that ev...

Hey Emily! I attended the Miguel Angel Asturias Spanish school and really enjoyed it. My fav. teacher was Roni if you want to request him, but they were all pretty good. If you have any problems with your school, it should be easy to get accepted to a new school with little advance notice. There are...

Um, ready for the weakest lead ever? Last summer I met a doctor in San Marcos La Laguna who worked a little pharmacy stand a couple of days a week. From the San Marcos boat dock just sort of walk through the tourist zone away from the lake until you come to this big playground/park public area, and ...

Yes, restaurant service in Xela can be laughably sub-par. But . . . as a career server, I would like to point out that one major obstacle to providing "good service" is that not all diners want the same treatment . Some want to be checked up on every few minutes; some want to be left alone. Some wan...

I am going to skip some of your questions, deferring to the more knowlegable folks, but let me throw in my two cents on a few: 1. I attended M.A.A. and it was fine, but it's what you make of it. (How often you choose to speak Spanish during the *other* 20 hours of the day). Keep in mind that you wil...
