Thanks! That's the only lead I have so far, so I appreciate it. Hoping to get back to Atitlan in a few weeks, so I'll check it out then.

Public health summer program at UVG, Solola?

I want to connect with local groups doing sustainability, development and appropriate technology, who would be interested in sharing their knowledge, in Spanish and/or English. One program I'm trying to find out about is connected with an professor from the US who teaches at UVG in Solola, at Lake A...

Where to buy a cushion

A minor issue, but if you need a cushion, this may be useful. I use a cushion when traveling, or even sitting in a net cafe for hours - helps the back. I lost by cushion in the market (put it beside me on a bench, and later it was gone.) So I went hunting for a replacement. I found a few options, at...

It doesn't sound very charitable in any case.

Update: here's part of the solution.

The best thing I've found is to wash the sheets often - say, twice a week. Since I've been doing this, the only time I got bites was when I went over by a few days. Mind you, I think that's fleas. Don't know if that works for bedbugs. He who sleep with Angelina wake up with something worse than flea...

Wifi at Lago Atitlan?

I'm looking for places to stay where I can work - meaning I need reasonably fast internet by wifi, or a cable in my room. The ideal (and probably unlikely) would be a computer desk like at Entremundos in Xela (where the internet is also a very good speed). Using an internet cafe is not an option - s...

Wifi is increasingly common - even Casa Argentina has it, along with dorm beds for Q20/night (which I guess makes it one of the cheapest places in town). While xelawho could show a lot more patience and civility, his information is correct (even if his examples were off, by being cafes rather than h...

Xelawho: maybe once you have some findings, you would like to add something to the growing body of research on the matter. Thanks. Note also that Appropedia pages are under an open license, so you can reuse them as long as they're attributed, mentioning the license. There's already a page on bedbugs...

Deane: Thanks, I was wondering if the little vacuums cleaners worked well enough. Wonder if the big ones do, or if they only make a difference on carpet. Fido, same name as what I have - I'd assume it's the same stuff. Active ingredient = permethrin - I wouldn't eat it and I avoid inhaling it, but i...

A. From the people I've spoken to in Xela, it's a minority that have never have a problem (I've met one who said they never had a problem, and many who have ongoing bites, from the medium to long term gringos I've talked with about it). Maybe it's a small sample size. B. I'm not staying in a hotel, ...

A palm rib broom might do it

I've been trying to work out why I never encountered bed bugs or fleas in Indonesia (where I spend more than 2 years) nor the other places in Asia where I spent some weeks. (I got the occasional unexplained bite, which might have been a flea, but nothing like here.) They don't have vacuums either, a...

Final questions

Cool - and the sender just needs to send it to Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, I assume, and I can collect it where I like? Also, I'm assuming they send it in US dollars and it gets changed here by the bank or agent (which would be a much better rate than getting it changed there). I also wouldn't mind t...

Beg/borrow/hire/buy a vacuum cleaner in Xela?

Is there anywhere to beg/borrow/hire a vacuum cleaner in Xela? Or even buy - I'm not here for long, but I could chip in and share one. Washing absolutely everything, to deal with the ubiquitous flea problem, but it won't be as effective unless I can give the room & mattress a good clean. A laborator...

Hiper Paiz

Thanks guatemaladad. I'm in Xela, and I'm guessing that I could pick up the WalMart MoneyGram transfer at Hiper Paiz - do you know if that's right?

Thanks for the suggestions! Unfortunately they are not sending me enough to to buy a house - actually just a few hundred dollars at this stage. So I suspect the WalMart MoneyGram option may be most suitable for me - I couldn't find a rate online, but if it's half as much as Western Union, that's pre...
