Re: Is Anyone Making a Visa Run at The Beginning of August-?

I was hoping August 13. Is this too late for you?

I´ll be in San Cristobal for 4 days and was thinking of visiting Palenque--did my Mexican History final on the HUGE tomb in Palenque.

Re: Where can I buy bars of chocolate?

I am seconding Al-Natur. It's all fair-trade, too! And they sell stuff from various charity organizations. A truly wonderful coffee shop. There is also a little gourmet chocolate and jewelry shop on 4 Calle and about 18 Callejon with great truffles and filled fruit chocolates. I don't remember the n...

Re: Don´t use this ATM

Well it's time specific obviously. For instance, one of my friends went to Fiji in 2000 and got nearly one FJD more than those who brought cash or cards. When I went in '03, I got one FJD less than those who brought cash, and about the same as those who brought cards. In the spring of 00 I got way l...

Re: Don´t use this ATM

Overall xelawho, I defer to your knowledge. You know alot more about all the situations than I. And for those who have been victims of scams, I REALLY wasn't trying to say, "well, it's your fault." Not at all. I've been in some tight travelling situations and hearing stuff like what I just said can ...

Re: Don´t use this ATM

While it took a loooong time to cash, I think I got a much better exchange rate than those who were using bank cards. I definitely got way better rates than those using credit. (I was getting 8.27:1 in September 2009) I still think traveller's cheques are better. I've heard of robbers holding foreig...

Thanks for all your up to date information. My information, as you both wisely guessed, is largely from the 80's, and from Menchu.

Re: Don´t use this ATM

Xelawho- I agree with you. I'm just venting about particular instances where some people were extremely rude in which I knew they were living entirely on credit, please don't take me too seriously or personally. I love haggling too, but there IS decorum to hold to, as there is decorum in living in a...

Re: Female robber stripped naked and burnt by mob

Also, I'll bet money that many of these lynchings are both class motivated and racially motivated and that the thieves in question are overwhelmingly of indigenous background. There's alot going on here.

Re: Female robber stripped naked and burnt by mob

In the picture I am counting about four men that appear to be in law enforcement, whether it is private or public. Both sectors don't really have a great track record for humane punishment. I don't think it can in anyway compare to modern day USA, but with numbers it does compare to the south in the...

Re: Don´t use this ATM

I guess this post is judgmental, but the use of credit cards with American tourists (which is what I am) was really frustrating from my point of view. I brought traveller's cheques--a hassle to cash, no doubt, but it is safe. If someone holds you up, no fear, just hand the money over and get reimbur...

Re: Resurrecting the "Guatemalan Dream"

As most people, Taylor Clark thinks alot of things, so it´s best to read the book in its entirety before plucking one idea and representing it as a whole. He did an interesting article on one of my mentors here; http://wweek.com/story.php?story=4983 And then Clark came out with Starbucked a few year...

Re: Teaching Spanish in USA

Felipe, I think the west coast has a glut of teachers, I was recently living in Oregon but now live in Ohio, where there´s a big need for Spanish teachers. Even in this economy. Essentially you need a degree, thirty credits or so in Spanish, and to pass the teacher´s certification for the specific s...

Re: Resurrecting the "Guatemalan Dream"

Um. Boy. I don´t even know what to say to people´s comments. Yeah, the people are pretty stupid and lazy. I mean, my teacher, she only knows three languages. Can you imagine? Only three? Why not five? Why not six? And come on, 30 tenses? Why not 50? And the little boy who curled up in my lap on Frid...

Re: Warning on the Mountain School

Of course people aren´t ever required to be open about their sexuality preference. But I know I sent an email to Sary at Miguel de Cervantes ahead of time telling her that I specifically wanted a female to be my instructor and that I wanted a vegetarian homestay. Likewise anyone can do the same for ...

Re: Cuban Cigars

Okay some more info, now that I´m here and have looked around- According to my sister you can bring 125 cigars back with you to the US without paying taxes. I´ll tell you how it works out after I go through customs. There are San Simon cigars. Those are the cheapest. Vrisa sells them for 2q a piece,...
