Re: Purchasing Mountain Bike

You should stop by Vrisa Books. Colin the owner rents bikes, is very knowledgeable about bikes in general and probably knows were to get a good deal. He might even have a bike or 2 for sale. Vrisas Books 15 Ave 3-46, Zona 1 near post office If that does not work there are a couple big bike stores. O...

Re: good price for an apartment

Cliff, There are tons of unfurnished places for rent here in Xela. However, unfurnished here means NOTHING no stove, fridge...etc. If you are from the USA unfurnished generally means no furniture but the fridge and stove are generally provided in rentals. Here unfurnished means truely unfurnished. I...

Re: room needed

James, Glad you found the room at EM, you should like it there! Thank you for the offer of Peanut Butter. Luckily for us Xela has improved in the Peanut butter department and while it is still expensive it is available at the local Walmart!! However, if you have any old magazines laying around the h...

Re: good price for an apartment

Very few places advertise online so you are not going to find the good deals online. I would pay for 1 month at the $400 apt then arrive and start looking around for a new place. There are places around town for $100 and up depending on what you need but you have to be willing to do some leg work wa...

Re: 50cc scooter, will i need a license?

You need a drivers license to drive any motorized vehicle in Guatemala even a small moto. You can drive using your home country license but since you do not have one of those it will be a problem for you. Being stopped by police is not super common but if it happened and if you do not have a license...

Re: room needed

Hi James, Glad to hear you are coming back to Xela for a visit. I think the Posada is still in business but they took down their signage which normally means they still rent but not "on the books." With your price range you should not have any trouble finding a good place if you look around a little...

Re: bus service zone 1 to zone 5

Yes, Xelawho is correct that is still a bus stop for Las Rosas. It is now a PUMA station used to Esso. The area south of Central Park is called Tope de Xelaju. It is very easy to find.

Re: renting a car in Tapachula with a Guatemalan license?

Kai, Is the no dark windows a new thing?? I have driven through MX many times and never heard of that. It might only pertain to cars with MX plates. I remember seeing tons of cars with polarized windows in MX, so I would double check that info. I have never rented a car in MX but I have rented many ...

Re: WANTED: a house to RENT in Xela - will PAY finders fee

Jazzman, Sorry to hear that. I wish you would have reached out to me personally while you were in town. Maybe if you had I might have been able to help you avoid some of the more exploitative members of society. Clearly living abroad is not for everyone, which is why I always try to encourage people...

Jazzman,

Did you make it to Xela? If so how about an update on your experience so far.

Just wondering how it is going if you are here.

Re: Weekly budget for food for two young adults

I think Q350 per week EACH is plenty if they eat at home, they could probably get by on less but I do not think they would need more for food. There are whole families living here that spend way less on food per month. Eating out can be economcial too. Simple comedeors in the market serve lunch for ...
