Re: Iphone SIM cards/plans in Guatemala?

Allen, GREAT update, thank you for taking the time to come back and post this info, you have certainly helped future travelers to Xela who want to use iPhones. As Xelawho said you can get most any phone unlocked in Xela however, the iphone is bit more expensive to unlock. My son has one and we paid ...

Re: acupuncture, anyone?

There are folks offering acupuncture in the places you mentioned but the market is by no means saturated. From a business standpoint I believe there is a market in Guatemala for this type of therapy, I can not tell you how big it is, but there are people seeking out this treatment. Tom In Xela Etzna...

Re: Updates on Xela? Cooking classes, dancing salsa, taxi, e

Hi Sarah, It is great to hear you will be coming back to visit Xela. Not too much has changed since your last visit. I do not know where you would find cooking classes but I know some of the Spanish schools offer them from time to time to their students. Salsa dancing is huge as always and you will ...

Re: traveling with hiv

Hospital Robles near El Calvario treats HIV patients, I do not have any details but maybe someone else here might have more info. There are at least a dozen or more guest houses in Xela and most are quieter than Casa Argentina. http://www.xelapages.com/hotel.htm New - http://xelapages.com/sabguestho...

Re: Driving to and In Guatemala from the USA

Our friend David Doss has made this trip more times than anyone else. Here is his write up for going from Brownsville, TX to Xela. http://mayamission.org/drivethrumexico_usatoguate.pdf I highly recommend you download it and read it, it is very detailed and even tho it was written a while ago it is a...

Re: Developing film in Xela

I saw a big sign on Central Park this week that says Fotos Q0.79. You can't miss it on the northwest corner across 12 Av from Banco Industrial. It did not say film or digital so I am not sure if that matters. Out at La Pradera Mall I am pretty sure Walmart develops pictures and there is a Fuji film ...

Re: Shipping a massage table?

In LA there are probably dozens of companies that ship to Central America. Many base their price on the size of the box not weight. Hopefully you can break the table down to fit in one or 2 boxes. For example a 30x30x30 box is $160.00 to $225.00 it does not matter what it weighs. Here are a couple p...

Re: Flight to Guate

One way tickets to Guatemala have been causing problems in the USA, especially with Spirit. I know of several people who were required to show some type of onward travel ticket in order to be checked in on their one way ticket to Guatemala. The airlines seem to accept a letter saying you have booked...

Re: Working "remotely" questions...

There are plenty of computer retailers in Xela and many more in Guate. The biggest one here is a placed called MTI which has several stores around town. Also Walmart carried laptops as do many mom and pop computer stores around town. You can expect to pay $300 to $500 for an ok netbook or laptop. Pr...

Re: Working "remotely" questions...

Hi Tim, Congrats on the new business! The good news is Internet is more available today than in any other time in Guatemala's history. However, wired internet using a LAN cable is not something you can get easily or cheap for a 1 month visit unless your hotel or guest house has it available. Most on...

It is horrible to hear what happened to you. I am thankful that you were able to escape. In yesterday's local newspaper they reported the capture of 3 guys who assaulted a group of Guatemalan tourist on La Muela. They are trying to find out if these guys are involved in other assaults. http://elquet...

Jane, I guess I had a 50/50 chance of guessing right and I blew it! Yes those buses I mentioned are chicken buses. Pullman service to Xela is from Guatemala city, so you might look for a shuttle or bus from Iztapa to Guate or Puerto San Jose to Guate then on to Xela. It is not the most direct route ...

Re: Iztapa to Xela

How do I best get from Iztapa to Xela? From the rest of your post I am going to assume you mean Xela to Iztapa, Guatemala which is near Port of San Jose. You say below that you are leaving Xela. How long will it take? By car 4 to 5 hours, by bus 6 to 7 hours I have someone willing to drive me for $...

Re: Greetings from Cebu Ciy

Bob, Nice to hear from you again. My last driving trip was in 2010 and there were no problems of significance on that trip. Our good friend Dave Doss drives at least twice a year and just got back into Xela last week. I have not talked to him but yet but from what I hear it was uneventful as well. F...
