Re: Electric and Cable Bills

I don't know about the light bill because I just pay my landlord.

The cable company accepts cash or check, and they will send a collector or you can go to either of these offices:
Oficina Central: 14 avenida 5-19 zona 3.
Kiosko en Centro Comercial Paseo Las Américas.

Re: Where to look for apartments in Xela

Sorry, I don't know how to find a furnished apartment in Xela or even if there are any. You can easily find a furnished room by asking any passerby in a neighborhood you like. Keep on asking, and eventually you may find one with a private bath. But you will have to take all you meals at your local c...

Just look for a truck that has "fletes" written on the windshield. Though I don't know where they hang out at in zone 1.

Re: Getting a NIT

You need your original passport but you might have to provide a copy also so take one with you. There is a copy place across the street from SAT. You will need a copy of all pages of the passport. I had to go back into that copy place three times because they kept missing pages, so check your copy ...

Re: U.S. T-Mobile cell phone use in Xela?

Now that I'm here I can report that I am indeed getting full text coverag via Movistar. I am however not getting any data thru any of the 3 providers that my Iphone can pick up. It just worked when I put a Claro chip in my Moto G. But it looks like for an iPhone you need to change the APN manually....

I don't think you can get data on prepaid Movistar. You can on Claro and Tigo, though.

Re: What to pack for extended trip to Xela?

Hi, I am wondering if I can get advice from people who live in or have been to Xela as to what we should pack to bring from Canada in our bags. Add earplugs to your list. Your bus driver may turn up the radio really loud. It's also possible to get a loud hotel room, although I didn't have a problem...

toilet paper - readily available and much cheaper here Well...it's readily available in the markets . Not in public bathrooms that don't have attendants. Best to carry enough for one visit to the toilet in case he uses the bathroom at the airport. I also like to carry a sliver of soap in a plastic ...

Re: Xela <-> Altamirano, MX

If you don't see a Xela-bound bus at La Mesilla or Huehue, you can take one towards the capital, and change at Cuatro Caminos.

Re: Xela <-> Altamirano, MX

Leaving Comitán, the buses left from near a market not unlike Xela's Democracia. I don't remember the name of it, though. time/frequency of buses: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/mexico/tabasco-and-chiapas/comitan/transport/getting-there-around This map makes things seem rather close together, but I too...

Re: Scuba in Guatemala

I don't know about diving on Pacific coast. You might try the Bay Islands off Hondura's gulf coast. If you go, be sure to stop in the lovely Copan Ruinas on the way there. But spend as little time as possible in San Pedro Sula and La Ceiba.

Re: Spanish schools

Chris - Did you do a homestay while you were in Xela? If so, how was it? I did not stay in a home arranged by the school. I first stayed at a hostel, until they shut it down, operated by Agencia de Viajes SAB. It was not very comfortable, but it was centrally located (2 C at 12 Av Z 1) and only Q10...

What is the best time of year, weather wise, to visit Xela?
I kind of like the rainy season because it keeps the dust down. But if you like it dry, it is pretty nice right after Easter.

Re: Fly to Tapachula

Take a chicken bus from Malacatán to ... Coatepeque.
If you want to be more comfortable, there are also some first class buses bound for Guatemala City that pass through Coatepeque and Reu. But only chicken buses from Coatepeque or Reu to Xela.
