Xelapages - Book & Magazine Exchange

Postby admin » Sat Feb 24, 2007 1:47 pm

Hi Everyone,

I have decided to start a book & magazine exchange to help me and you find new and exciting reading material.

Currently my selection is limited to the books & magazines I had laying around the house which was very limited. So I need your help!!

I am in search of any books or magazines you might have laying around your house. The subject matter is unimportant, I am open to all subjects. In particular I would like magazines because they are light weight and hopefully it would be easy for you to stick a couple in your backpack before leaving home.

If you in Xela and have some old magazines stop by and trade them for my old magazines. You better hurry I only have 1 National Enquirer and one People Magazine which will go fast!

It is not my nature to beg but PLEASE bring me some magazines or books so I do not have keep reading the same thing over and over!!!

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Your humble admin,

Tom Lingenfelter

full-service library

Postby Snubby » Tue Feb 27, 2007 12:08 pm

Good idea for a "take one, leave one" exchange library. It might be nice to eventually expand to a "full service" English-language lending library in Xela one day. Maybe I can make that my project when I eventually settle there.

there is already an english-language lending library at vrisa bookstore. unlike other libraries, you have to pay a deposit equal to the value of the book, and there is a daily (or maybe weekly) charge. but both seem reasonable given first that it is a business, and second the flakiness of most tourists.

snubby, if you do get your library started here in xela, i will be the first to apply for a card.

I would not recommend shipping anything heavy like a box of books or magazines that would be too much.

But if you want to bring a few with you I would appreciate it.

I feel like beggars can not be choosers so all books and mags are of interest. Even exercise and vampire themes will be accepted!!

When you see my meager pickings you will understand!!

I will take anything you want to bring, the subject is not really all that important I like to read in English and do not get many magazines here.

I just got about a half dozen Money magazines from Canada which has been fun to read as I have not been exposed to Money Management from the Canadian point of view. We also got a few Reader Digest which are always great easy, fun reading.

Bring whatever you have, new used it does not matter!!

Thank you

Tom,

That sounds like a great idea. I will bring some NewsWeek and People magazines when I go there in April. Where exactly is this Book & Magazine Exchange located? I probably will be stumbling around lost for the first couple of days.

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to these boards, up late night with a butterfly belly because I'm soooo excited about Guatemala. I leave for Xela mid-August and come back the beginning of October. Can you believe that my flight was only $385.00? With tax. That was definitely a find.

Okay. So I'm a used bookseller, specializing in whatever prizes I find at estate sales. I've started a collection of books to bring to Guatemala.

Some backstory: When I was there previous in 2000 I worked in an orphanage, and did some work in the slums in Guatemala City--I couldn't tell you which zona, I was only 16, but it was the one that drops off in a sort of ravine where everyone throws their trash. I befriended a family and promised them I'd come back and help. I feel sort of silly, I mean how can I help? But I know English language books are helpful and rare commodity for kids, adults learning the English language, and for ex-pats like you. I'd really like a list of what to look for and specifically where you think I should donate them and which books YOU want. This is what I've so far squirrelled away, and I've been very selective:

1. Peace is Every Step by Thich Nhat Hanh
2. Silent Spring by Rachel Carson
3. We wish to inform you that tomorrow we will be killed with our families by Philip Gourevitch
4. I, Rigoberta Menchu by Guess Who
5. Moby Dick
6. A much older, pretty copy of Locksley Hall by Tennyson (I couldn't sell it for the life of me and couldn't bear tossing it, I'm not sure I'll keep this in due to the lack of interest by most people.)
7. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
8. Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers by Sapolsky
9. One hundred years of solitude by gabriel garcia marquez
10. Heart of Darkness
11. What will Fat Cat sit on by Jan Thomas
12. Numbers 1 to 10 Golden Books Workbook
13. I Spy Two Eyes: Numbers In Art by Lucy Micklethwait
14. The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
15. Does a Kangaroo Have a Mother, Too? by Eric Carle
16. Song of the Swallows by Leo Politi
17. Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do you See? by Eric Carle
18. The Wish by Gail Carson Levine
19. The Oxford Spanish-English Dictionary
20. Century of the Wind by Eduardo Galeano
21. Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
22. A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett
23. Little Women
24. Woman Hollering Creek by Sandra Cisneros
25.Palabras Basicas/Beginning Sight Words Espanol/English

I still have room for another 20-30 pounds. What books do members of the Xela community really want/need in the English language? What do you guys want? I've literally gone through about 4000 books this month alone--I just don't know what to bring and so haven't been holding back the more expensive books I've come across. Some advice is much desired.

I've thought of throwing in the Chronicles of Narnia or the Redwall Series or Harry Potter or a million other things.

Hi,

Is this still going on? I'll be in Xela soon and have a bunch of Economist magazines I can bring.

Answering for Tom, yes this is still going on. I love The Economist, though, with my sixth-grade education, some of the articles are a bit over my head. I look forward to seeing more. I will just have to have my dictionary handy.

Robin,

As Felipe said the book exchange is going strong. We would love your contribution. We have some magazines to trade but not many. But we do have a bookshelf full of good books, so maybe you can find something you like.

Please whatever you are comfortable carrying.

Thank you,

Tom

Assuming this is "still going on" by the fact that it's pinned to the top of the board... my husband is volunteering all kinds of used paperbacks for me to bring. We'll see how many I can fit in my weight allowance. As fellow book-addicts, we can't stand the thought that you're suffering from withdrawal :) See you in June.
