Travel from Xela to Lake Attilan and Antigua

Post by SFchica » Tue Sep 22, 2015 9:55 pm

Hello everyone,

I'm in Xela for two weeks of Spanish and really want to check out Lake Attilan and Antigua. The school unfortunately don't have any trip during the time I'm here but I think I can manage to go alone for just 1 or 2 days. I know that's very short period of time but I just want to check out the highlights/ most visited spots.

This weekend I'm thinking of going to Lake Attilan on Sat then returning on Sun. Do you have any suggestions on transportation or what shuttle/tour to book? Any recommendation is much appreciated!

Thanks!

I suggest you talk to Xela Pages, and anyone they can recommend. Have a safe trip.

Shuttle Services to Lake Atitlan

Approx cost: $20-$25 USD

There are also direct chicken buses leaving the Minerval Terminal to Panajachel hourly from 9am to 5pm.
Approx cost: Q35.00

You can also take any bus going to Guatemala city and get off at La Cuchilla (turn off to Pana). From there you take a pickup truck or another chicken bus to Pana.

Enjoy your time in Guatemala!!

I took the chicken buses to Panajachel - not the easiest journey of my life, but it cost me about 25Q.
Have a look at my blog post for a very detailed breakdown of my journey- http://www.clairesfootsteps.com/?p=325 for very detailed instructions on how to.

I had to take a shuttle to Antigua from Lake Atitlan as it was independence day, but it is very doable on chicken buses too. The driver will always be able to advise you where to board and change. And the buses are great fun!

Thank you everyone, so many good suggestions! Someone at the school also recommends the door to door service at Monte Verde so I'm thinking of doing that. I'll read your chicken bus guide too, Claire. How about hotels/ hostels and which village to visit in one or two days, what do you guys think?

I also saw a few half day tour to Fuentes Georginas. Do you think it's worth it to do a tour or is it better to go by oneself to have more time at the hot springs?

Thank you again!
